These days, it seems, the coming-of-age story is nothing special. They are a dime a dozen and usually not very compelling. They miss out on that one trait that allows such a tale to speak: quirk. Spud is not one of those. In fact, it is so overflowing with quirk (and not to mention the apartheid South Africa backdrop it’s set against that it may just cause tears and laughter at the same time. Relatively as well as more absolutely.
