2008 | AugustTwentyfourth

September’s on its way, and that means that autumn is upon us. This signals school, homework, and new seasons of TV shows, including the introduction of some new and interesting reels as well. Here are some that caught my eye. In order by dates; images/posters below.

90210, THE CW (September 2, 2008)
An edgy, contemporary spin-off of the iconic drama “Beverly Hills, 90210,” the new “90210″ looks at life through the eyes of Annie Wilson and her brother Dixon, whose first day at West Beverly Hills High School leaves no doubt they’re not in Kansas anymore. The Wilson family, including dad Harry and mom Debbie, has relocated to Beverly Hills to keep an eye on Harry’s mother Tabitha, a feisty-but-faded former television star and a charter member of the Betty Ford Clinic. The two-hour pilot/premiere was directed by Mark Piznarski of Gossip Girl fame.

I never watched the original, but hey if I can enjoy Gossip Girl, I might as well give its California counterpart a test run. Sometimes I really think my brain fluid has already leaked out through my eyeballs.

TRUE BLOOD, HBO (September 7, 2008)
The series follows Sookie Stackhouse, a barmaid living in Louisianna who can read people’s minds, and how her life is turned upside down when the Vampire Bill, walks into her place of employment two years after vampires ‘came out of the coffin’ on national television. Featuring Anna Paquin, produced by Alan Ball, based on the novels by Charlaine Harris.

Vampires. Need I say more? I’ve actually already watched the leaked pilot, and though I’ve always been a skeptic of the mind-reading waitress who is Sookie, this show got me hooked. It seems as if this is the same case as Gossip Girl, whose original novels I forgo, but whose visual adaption I more happily watch. Though in the case of GG, it has a lot to do with the eye-bleeding writing.

PRIVILEGED, THE CW (September 9, 2008)
Haha, Yes, another one. 23 year-old Megan Smith, would be journalist, takes tutoring job to headstrong (rich) twins Rose and Sage in Palm Beach. Gets nice suite, gets attention from (rich) man, and we shall stop the summary here. Based on Zoey Dean’s novel, How To Teach Filthy Rich Girls.

At least they didn’t try to do the A-List, that’s all I can say. Will I watch it? Maybe. Probably. Fine, yes, but only to try. Maybe. You know, they better have awesome clothes. Then I can just say I’m watching it for the fashion. Hey it works for Gossip Girls (but these days the excuse is usually Chuck).

DOLLHOUSE, FOX (January 2009)
You know, I could just write “Joss Whedon” and leave it at that. But no…

The show follows an organization that employs mind-wiped DNA-altered humans known as Dolls who are implanted with false memories and skills for various missions and tasks. When they are not ‘at work’ they are living in a real life Dollhouse which gives the show the name. One of those mind-wiped humans, a young woman named Echo, is slowly starting to become aware of herself and what’s going on - all the while somebody on the outside is trying to bring the Dollhouse down while getting closer to Echo - possibly not aware that she is one of the Dolls heis after. Eliza Dushku to play Echo, airs 8pm Mondays before 24. Oh, and um JOSS WHEDON.
